How is eye color determined?

I was just wondering.....I have brown eyes and my husband has blue. Our son is almost 2 now and he has dark blue eyes, they are not as light as my husbands. My mother in law says that he has a mxture of both. I thought that your eye color was one or the other, not a mixture. Can anyone answer this for me?How is eye color determined?
Eye colour is determined by a number of genes that code whether pigment will be each of the three layers of the iris and how dense the pigment will be. Brown eyes have pigment in all three layers, various shades of brown determined by how dense. Blue and green eyes have pigment in one or two layers, shade of blue or green determined by density and location of pigment. Your son will inherit a mixture of genes for each layer, some from you, some from your husband and the mixture will determine his eye colour. There is not just one gene for overall eye colour.

A brown eyed parent and a blue eyed parent can have children with blue, green, hazel or brown eyes; there are several shades or variations in each colour group. How is eye color determined?
Eye color is an inherited trait influenced by more than one gene.[6][7] There are two major genes and other minor ones that account for the tremendous variation of human eye color.[8] In humans, three genes associated with eye color are currently known: EYCL1, EYCL2, and EYCL3.[9][10] These genes account for three phenotypic eye colors (brown, green, and blue) in humans.[3] Eye color usually stabilizes when an infant is around 6 months old.[
Its all about genetics %26amp; your son's eye color may still change. Its not that it is a mixture, but rather the way the gene decided to display itself.
